Letters: San Francisco, California, to Harriet E. Kimball, Haverhill, Massachusetts, 1853-1859

Creator/Contributor:

Kimball, Harriet E., correspondent.

Abstract:

Five handwritten letter from a mother in California to her married daughter back East, three from 1853 (dated March 28, November 25, and December 30) and two from 1859 (date March 19 and 30). The first letter largely concerns the mother's journey from New York to San Francisco through Panama. Other topics of the letters include receiving materials and possessions from the East, setting up a house, and matters of friends and family. She mentions in the fourth letter going to "the Lake House" in a carriage for a picnic because "some people think they dont have anything ... in California." She also remarks that "in California ... a woman is thought something of if she be [housed?] herself." In the final two letters, the correspondent says that she is planning on returning to Massachusetts in April 1859, but she asks that her return be a surprise. Signature illegible, possibly L.A.C. Downs or Dodre.
